Only Two Choices

Posted by iwanttofitin on March 1, 2007

I thought I’d share this nifty little quote from Nobel Prize winner George Wald:

There are only two possible explanations as to how life arose. Spontaneous generation arising to evolution or a supernatural creative act of God…. There is no other possibility. Spontaneous generation was scientifically disproved 120 years ago by Louis Pasteur and others, but that just leaves us with only one other possibility. . . that life came as a supernatural act of creation by God, but I can’t accept that philosophy because I do not want to believe in God. Therefore I choose to believe in that which I know is scientifically impossible, spontaneous generation leading to evolution.

Luis Pastor’s findings have virtually no bearing on the debate over how life began. His findings only proved that life does not spontaneously generate under certain circumstances. This could be because he didn’t include the ingredient “God” or because he did not not include one or more of billions of other, more mundane, possible ingredients needed. Or maybe he got the ingredients right, but failed to create the extreme circumstances of heat or pressure (or cold or…) or a thousand other things.
